STERLING SILVER CROSS OF ST ALBAN

Polished sterling silver cross of St Alban on a silver chain. This design is based on the distinctively shaped 3rd Century Cross of St Alban. This cross shape is said to have been brought to St Albans in England by Amphibalus, a fugitive Christian priest. Alban, a prominent citizen, sheltered the priest and gave him the cross. The two exchanged clothes as disguise but both men were eventually caught by the Roman soldiers and Alban was executed on the site of the present Abbey church of St Albans in England. This distictive shape may also have been influenced by the Ankh symbol of longevity. This pendant sits on a 16 inch sterling silver snake chain and is approximately 12mm by 27mm. As well as our own shops, these crosses are also available from the gift shop at St Albans Cathedral.
